Geoffrey Rush Sues News Corp's Daily Telegraph To "Redress Slurs, Innuendo"

  • Geoffrey Rush Is Now Suing The Daily Telegraph For Defamation

The Daily Telegraph's reporting and advertising over the past week carried the defamatory meanings that the 66-year-old Australian actor was a "pervert" and a "sexual predator" while starring in the Sydney Theatre Company's production of "King Lear" two years ago, according to documents filed in the Australian Federal Court on Friday.

The Oscar-winning actor Geoffrey Rush has launched defamation proceedings against the Sydney Daily Telegraph, accusing the paper of splashing "spurious claims with bombastic titles on their front pages".

Rush told a news conference at his lawyer's Melbourne office that the newspaper's reporting had damaged his reputation and hurt his family and colleagues. "This situation is intolerable and I must now seek vindication of my good name through the courts in Australia".

The Daily Telegraph Editor Chris Dore said in a statement to Reuters that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp-run newspaper will defend itself.

"We will defend our position in court".

The Oscar victor is seeking damages after the news publication reported allegations that the actor behaved inappropriately towards a female cast member during a 2015 production of KING LEAR.

"Further, he has not been informed by them of the nature of the complaint and what it involves".

"At the time the complaint was made, the complainant requested that the matter be dealt with confidentially, and did not want Mr Rush notified or involved in any investigation", a statement read. He was absent from Wednesday's televised event in Sydney, where stars dodged questions from reporters about the allegations.

The first complaint is about the newspaper's billboard on November 30, a poster usually seen on the outside of newsagents, which said: "WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Geoffrey Rush in scandal claims, theatre company confirms "inappropriate behaviour".

Rush is one of Australia's most celebrated actors, having starred in films including "Shine", "Elizabeth" and "The King's Speech".
