Sensex leaps to biggest single-day gain in a month

The barometer 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE closed at 32,949.21 points - up 352.03 points or 1.08 per cent - from its previous close.

The Nifty soared 122.60 points, or 1.22 per cent, on Thursday to close at 10,166.70 after shuttling between 10,182.65 and 10,061.90.

Gas stocks ended higher.

The index had lost 205 points yesterday after the Reserve Bank held the policy rate and raised the inflation forecast for the remainder of the fiscal.


The Nifty mid-cap and small-cap indices climbed by 1.43 per cent and 1.44 per cent, respectively. Positive opening in European shares boosted investors' sentiment in the domestic market.

On the NSE, 1,273 shares advanced, 473 declined, while 60 remained unchanged.

The rupee's weakness against the dollar too dampened the overall mood. Most Asian shares declined as USA policy uncertainty kept sentiment in check.

Other gainers were Asian Paints, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel, Bajaj Auto, NTPC, L&T, ICICI Bank, HUL, SBI, Tata Motors, Lupin, Adani Ports, Hero Motocorp, Power Grid and Infosys, rising by up to 3.29 per cent.

Defying the bullish spirit were index heavyweights such as TCS (down 0.52 per cent), Coal India (down 0.64 per cent), Cipla (down 0.50 per cent), Sun Pharma (down 0.26 per cent) and Wipro (down 0.34 per cent). Asian major also settled higher on Thursday with Nikkei 225 index climbing over 1 per cent followed by Hang Seng 0.28 per cent.
