  • Tayside on alert as blizzards and 80mph winds expected to batter Scotland

CNR International made the decision as t he Met Office predicts Thursday will see wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour and large waves.

Storm Caroline is expected to barrel into the United Kingdom overnight after strengthening in the Atlantic Ocean throughout Wednesday.

When the storm eases on Friday, a blast of freezing air from Russian Federation - dubbed the "Beast from the East" - is forecast to send temperatures plummeting to lows of -8C.

On Saturday the heaviest and most frequent of the snow showers will progressively become confined to northeast Scotland with strong northwest winds possibly causing drifting of the snow in places with blizzard conditions possible.

It is one of three weather warnings now in place around the country.

Transport networks face widespread disruption and power cuts are possible as a result of the extreme weather, the forecaster said.

Snow showers will affect northern Scotland later on Thursday, with the risk extending across more of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and western parts of England on Friday.

The biting cold snap set to grip Britain is likely to continue into next week with more sleet and snow showers predicted and temperatures struggling to climb above freezing.

"Longer journey times and cancellations are likely as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected".

Winds are forecast to strengthen across parts of Britain on Wednesday ahead of the arrival of Storm Caroline.

A snow-ice warning has been issued for Ireland for the coming days.

"Large waves are expected and beach material may be thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties".

Ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond said: "Much colder easterlies could arrive, meaning a predominantly chilly run-up to Christmas".

Met Eireann last issued a snow warning for Donegal last month when temperatures plunged to -2C on Thursday, November 23, leading to some snowfall on high ground housing estates in towns like Letterkenny.
