FacebookFacebook has launched a version of its Messenger app aimed for children six to twelve years old.
Just as vocal are parents who said children's adoption of technology is an inevitability and appreciated Facebook's approach with the new app. He said the company would not automatically convert children's accounts to adult accounts when they turned 13.
Facebook Messenger appeared to be down on Tuesday morning, according to multiple reports.
The social network has not commented on Mr Hunt's tweet. But on Monday, the tech firm said it was rolling out a messaging app that will let children under that age send texts, photos and videos, and add stickers, frames and filters to their images.
In a blog post for the launch, Facebook's Loren Cheng said: "Today, parents are increasingly allowing their children to use tablets and smartphones, but often have questions and concerns about how their kids use them and which apps are appropriate. Once the app is downloaded it will have to be registered and verified with any one of the parents" Facebook account and then on creating the child's profile, it will only need their name and nothing else.
Is Facebook down? Is Facebook Messenger not working?
The idea is to make sure that parents have full control over the online experience of their children, and Messenger Kids is one such app created to open lines of communication along the way.
The outage follows a similar problem for Facebook Messenger on November 30, when users reported being unable to send messages.
It's now only available in the United States while it is being trialled and you can also only access it via an IOS device.
Dr. Jenny Radesky, assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of MI, C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, said that children younger than 12 years old are not ready to use social media without parental supervision.
But, only a handful of messaging and social apps - like Kudos, a photo-sharing app - are designed for younger children to use with parental permission and supervision. "Combine that immaturity with the problematic interactions that commonly occur over social media, and it could be messy".
The company said it had spent months talking to parenting groups, child behavioural experts and safety organisations to aid in developing the app, as well as thousands of hours interviewing families on the ways members communicated with one another.
But some online safety experts say many kids under the age of 13 are already on social networks.
