Google to yank Youtube from Amazon in nasty giant fight

  • Google Starts Blocking YouTube on Fire TV, Echo Show

For its part, Amazon, through a spokeswoman, said that Alphabet's Google unit is "setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website".

Both parties have said that they hope the matter will be resolved soon, but neither looks likely to budge.

According to the data from research firm eMarketer, Amazon's voice-controlled devices have been outsold Google's devices. The video service will be pulled from the Echo Show today, while Fire TV owners will lose access to it on January 1, 2018.

Google claims that the way the Echo Show uses YouTube was in violation of its rules, and that it was unfair that Google was being forced to support Amazon when the online marketplace had stopped stocking its products.

"We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services", Google has been telling the press. Sans YouTube, Amazon looks to be banking on its in-house services and against the Chcolate Factory's built-in customer base.

As for streaming TV alternatives, just about any other device will play YouTube.

The feud between Amazon and Google is escalating, and consumers may soon notice it in a pretty big way. The latest dispute is over the e-commerce company's refusal to sell some Google devices that compete with Amazon's products.

Google and Amazon have been in discussions for a long time to try and have a more mutually beneficial relationship, but it sounds like it hasn't been going well. A couple of weeks ago, Echo Show users were told to use the web version of YouTube as a workaround, once again bringing the application back to the smart speaker. For example, Amazon does not sell Apple TV in its store, nor does it plan to sell Apple HomePod, Apple's smart speaker competitor to Amazon Echo.

Of course, Google is taking this quite personally and has blocked Amazon from implementing Alexa commands into its YouTube app due to a violation to the Ts & Cs. Google shares and Amazon shares both closed higher in Tuesday's United States trading session.
