Fifty-Eight House Democrats Vote to Proceed with Impeachment

Green has discussed impeaching Trump since the spring and previously filed impeachment articles in October, almost forcing a vote at that time before House Democratic leaders persuaded him to temporarily abandon the effort. All Republicans voted to turn away Green's resolution, while four Democratic lawmakers voted present.

The measure was voted down 364-58 as every Republican and a majority of Democrats opted to table the measure.

Green argued that Trump should be impeached for his rhetoric against certain racial and ethnic groups, including Latinos, Muslims and blacks.

"Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment", they wrote in a statement.

House Republicans, joined by many Democrats, swiftly crushed a Democratic bid on Wednesday to force a vote on impeaching President Donald Trump.

Green cited Trump's equivocating in the wake of a deadly white nationalist rally in Virginia, his attacks on Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) and his criticisms of NFL players' kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police abusing African-Americans.

Pelosi and Hoyer said in a statement that while legitimate questions exist about Trump's fitness to lead, now is not the time for impeachment.

Green added that President Trump has "sown discord among the people of the United States".

The White House quickly dismissed the impeachment effort, labeling Green and his allies "extremists". "The special counsel's investigation is moving forward as well, and those inquiries should be allowed to continue".

"We ought to let Mr. Mueller complete his full investigation rather than engage in what would essentially be a public relations stunt", said Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Mich).

Green first unveiled a draft of his articles of impeachment in October, but refrained from demanding a vote on it. Voting prematurely forces Democrats facing re-election in tough districts to go on the record about their desire to impeach Trump, leaving them with a sort of Catch-22: If they vote to kill the resolution, they risk alienating the blue half of their voters; if they vote to proceed, they risk alienating the other half.
