With no end in sight, Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office revealed the cost to USA taxpayers thus far for the Russian Federation collusion investigation.

"No subpoena has been issued or received", White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a briefing.

Deutsche Bank received a subpoena from Mr Mueller several weeks ago, according to the Reuters news agency, citing a person close to the matter.

He says he's confirmed "this with the bank and other sources".

Manafort is facing felony charges involving allegations of money laundering and other financial crimes related to work in Ukraine.

Trump has done billions of dollars' worth of business with Deutsche Bank in the past 20 years; he has previously said that he would consider Mueller looking into his finances beyond any connection to the Russian Federation investigation "a violation".

The special counsel has over a dozen lawyers working for his office. Mueller reports to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed him, although the rule gives a special counsel broad discretion to run the investigation without regularly consulting with the department or requesting its approval.

Mueller incorporated several ongoing investigations within the Justice Department including those of Trump campaign contacts with Russian Federation, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's business activities and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The money was spent between mid-May, when the investigation began, and September 30 of this year.

The bulk of the spending- $1.7 million - has been on personnel salary and benefits, according to the report. The rest was spent on the relocation of Justice Department employees temporarily assigned to the expanding investigation, the report shows.

The special counsel's budget itself has not been made public. He spent $26,592 in the probe's first phase, from the time he was appointed on December 30, 2003 to March 31, 2004, on personnel, travel, contracts and supplies, according to an audit from the Government Accountability Office.
