  • Yemen fighting will lead to 'more tragedy'

The clashes between Saleh's supporters and the Houthis underscore the complex situation in Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Middle East, where a proxy war between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the Saudi-backed Hadi has caused one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in recent times. Two of Saleh's associates have confirmed and a third official from the government of Yemen's internationally recongnized president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, has also confirmed.

Images of Saleh's lifeless body were broadcast around the world, with Houthi leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi stating in an announcement later that day that Saleh had been killed for "treason".

The war in Yemen, the Arab world's most destitute country, plunged into a new and uncertain chapter Monday when its former president was killed amid an explosive bout of fighting that has convulsed the capital.

Foes and supporters said Saleh was killed in a roadside ambush after switching sides in the civil war, abandoning his Iran-aligned Houthi allies in favour of the Saudi-led coalition. Therefore, Houthis finally chose to kill him; not because he turned against them, but because he is capable of destroying their political project.Days ago, Saleh changed the map when he annulled his alliance with Houthis. The assassination of Saleh aims to thwart the reconciliation project. As long as we realize that Saleh's assassination aimed to thwart reconciliation, we must work toward making it succeed. What Saleh did in the last four days before his assassination is the most important event since the war erupted three years ago.

On Saturday he abruptly switched sides, defecting to the Saudi-led Gulf coalition that has been bombing Houthi forces in northern Yemen.

Sayyid said Saleh and other top party officials had came under Huthi gunfire as they fled Sanaa.

Members of his political party claimed Saleh had been killed at point-blank range, after his three-vehicle convoy was stopped by Houthi militiamen. He remained, however, a key player in the years that followed and played a pivotal role in the country's ongoing conflict. The Saudis had publicly welcomed Saleh's about-face, but any hope of a radical change in the balance of power in the conflict appears to have been terminated along with Saleh's life.

The Houthis accused Saleh of betrayal, and vowed to keep up the fight against the Saudi-led coalition. "But this is far from over - Saleh was an icon in Yemen for millions, and so his death will not go slowly or unanswered".
