  • “Riverdale” Sabrina the Teenage Witch Spinoff Moves From The CW to Netflix

Riverdale has been a success story for both the CW and the streaming service, which has domestic SVOD rights to the dark, soapy drama and carries it internationally in many territories. The CW has revealed that the spinoff series focused on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch has been picked up for two seasons, but instead of being on The CW alongside Archie Andrews and his pals, her show will be a Netflix Original Series. So, when will the Sabrina reboot be on Netflix?

The new, as-yet-untitled series (which we're betting will be called Sabrina for simplicity's sake), will be mostly inspired from the critically acclaimed Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book series written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Robert Hack, which gave fans an updated and modern re-imagining of Sabrina the Teenage Witch's occult origins. "TV will own the Sabrina series, while "'Riverdale' is a co-production with CBS TV Studios". Aguirre-Sacasa also wrote the comic Afterlife with Archie, which depicts a zombie apocalypse in the town of Riverdale. Like Riverdale, this show's going to err on the side of spooky.

A project that was originally going to be developed for The CW has found a new home.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was initially set to be a companion series to The CW's Riverdale. THR says the CW and Warner Bros.

This version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch won't have much in common with the previous television incarnation of the character. This dark coming-of-age story deals with horror, the occult, and witchcraft and finds Sabrina struggling to reconcile her dual nature (being half-witch and half-mortal) while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil. The Sabrina series could be the first of many Riverdale spin-offs, with Aguirre-Sacasa saying before the show debuted that he wanted to "expand" the world of the series. Berlanti Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. TV. As we've seen, Netflix is also willing to spend plenty of money on shows - which could mean a noticeable bump up in quality for the show.
