  • Apple accuses Qualcomm of patent infringement in countersuit

On Wednesday, Qualcomm filed a lawsuit with the US District Court in Southern California and the US International Trade Commission (ITC), claiming that Apple had infringed on 16 of its patents.

Now Qualcomm has filed a new lawsuit against Apple and this on included their new iPhone X as well as other devices.

Apple did not specify the scale of the damages it is seeking over the power-management patent infringement.

What could be even more devastating for Apple is that Qualcomm is also seeking a ban on the import of any iPhone devices that come with Intel chips. "Qualcomm's paid advertising makes wildly inflated claims about its role in the development of the smartphone, but the facts show that it was Apple that put an easy-to-use computer-phone in the palm of people's hands, not Qualcomm".

Many of these technologies feel essential to most modern smartphones, but things are getting personal for Qualcomm which is playing David in a major legal battle with Apple which has likely contributed to curtailing profits at the technology firm. Qualcomm General Counsel Don Rosenberg noted, "You can't react that quickly to file lawsuits".

Qualcomm on Wednesday sued Apple again, alleging that several iPhones, including 2017 and 2016 models, violate several Qualcomm inventions related to cellular connectivity, power efficiency, and 3D imagery.

In particular, Qualcomm points to the iPhone X's multitasking interface and its similarities to the interface webOS used to use.

A Reuters report from last month had also suggested that Apple would completely ditch Qualcomm's technologies from next year as a result of the ongoing tussles. Qualcomm has already asked the ITC for an injunction on the iPhone 7 and iPad models it claims are infringing on its patents.

Both the giants are locking horns with each other by suing in back to back lawsuits, and Apple has completely declined to comment on the issue.

Qualcomm claims that the new complaints aren't directly related to Apple's legal action. Apple alleges it owns at least eight battery life patents that Qualcomm has violated. That includes the latest iPhone 8 duo as well as the more in demand iPhone X now on offer from AT&T and T-Mobile.
