Greta Gerwig Still Can't Believe Lady Bird's Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

  • Lady Bird Just Broke a Rotten Tomatoes Record Previously Held by Toy Story 2

The Pixar sequel, released in 1999, initially held the record with 163 consecutive positive reviews.

The coming-of-age drama is based on Gerwig's own experiences growing up in Northern California and sees Ronan's character, Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson, desperate to leave home and her overbearing mother (Laurie Metcalf) for the wider worldview of college life.

"This is completely fantastic and so incredibly appreciated by the entire team that made Lady Bird", Gerwig said in a statement to Rotten Tomatoes.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Lady Bird has a 100% "Tomatometer" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 170 "Fresh Reviews" and zero "Rotten Reviews".

"The movie's Tomatometer score will be subject to change as it continues to platform from limited release, likely into the next year", Rotten Tomatoes editor Alex Vo wrote in an article explaining the new record.

To wit, Greta Gerwig's directorial debut is now the best-reviewed movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes, per EW, topping a classic in Toy Story 2.

Lady Bird is not the top movie of all time on the site, but none of the movies with a flawless score ahead of Lady Bird have received as many positive reviews. The more positive "fresh" reviews from critics, the higher a film's Rotten Tomato rating will be. The movie now boasts a rare 100% score with 173 reviews and counting on an average rating of 8.9/10.

Originally released in just two cities, "Lady Bird" expanded to theaters nationwide November 24.
