I am biggest supporter of LeT, they like me too: Pervez Musharraf

  • Former Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf also said the LeT “was not involved” in the 2008 Mumbai attacks

According to the UNSC official website, Saeed was included in the list pursuant to paragraphs 1 and 2 of resolution 1822 (2008) as being associated with LeT (QDe.118) and Al Qaida (QDe.004) for "participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing or perpetrating of acts of activities by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf or in support of both entities". Musharraf said he likes them as these terrorist organisations and their chief aim at targeting the Indian Army in Kashmir.

Musharraf is now in Dubai, where he has taken refuge after Pakistan charged him with treason. "I have met him (Hafiz Saeed)", he had said.

Earlier in the day, former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf came out in support of the terror groups, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD), saying they were the biggest force against the Indian Army in Kashmir.

On previous occasions too, General Musharraf had denied that Hafiz Saeed's JuD or LeT was involved in the 2008 Mumbai attack that left 168 people dead. Lashkar-e-Taiba are involved in Kashmir but in Kashmir it is between us and India.

The US has also branded Saeed a terrorist and put a $10 million bounty on Saeed's head after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. "The Hafiz Saeed issue is an issue in India, not in the United States". The US had asked Pakistan to rearrest Saeed, who has been designated a terrorist by the US Justice Department. The organisation that is exclusively responsible for banned Lashkar-e-Taiba is The Jammat-ud-Dawa that was responsible for carrying out the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

Saeed, the co-founder of LeT and Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief, was freed by the Lahore High Court (LHC) after 297 days of house arrest.

Though a new ombudsperson has not been appointed yet, the office remains operational and is accepting new delisting requests during the transition period, the United Nations said in a statement on its website.

Washington had said that the JuD chief's release sends a "deeply troubling message about Pakistan's commitment to combating global terrorism".
