The pro-Brexit Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which strongly supports British rule in Northern Ireland, has said it will not countenance the province operating under different regulations to the rest of the UK.

The deadlock over what the Irish border will look like after Brexit could be settled with a new referendum in Northern Ireland, a Conservative MEP has suggested. There is undoubtedly an ever-increasing usage of nasty, jingoistic language by certain sections of the Brexit brigade, built on the shaky mythology of past imperial glory and imagined superiority.

He added: "There are other areas where, frankly, divergence will come about on those regulations because we in Northern Ireland, being part of the United Kingdom, believe we are going in a different direction".

"I would welcome very much the fact that the United Kingdom has brought forward proposals that go very close towards meeting the requirements of the European Union 27 member states.in order to reach agreement on the first part of the agenda" concerning the financial settlement, said the agriculture commissioner Phil Hogan.

They took to the streets to ask random British people about Brexit's impact on Ireland, and they asked them to draw a line on a blank map of Ireland showing where the Republic ends and the North begins. If EU governments accept it, the next step is for them to declare at their Dec 14 summit that talks can now start on the future relationship between Britain and its biggest trading partner.

It comes ahead of a crucial meeting between the British Prime Minister Theresa May and European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker in Brussels on Monday.

European Union leaders will then gather for a crucial summit on December 14 to rule whether "sufficient progress" has been made to start the trade talks.

Britain has insisted it is impossible to finalise how the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic will work before UK-EU trade talks.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Wednesday that progress had been made in talks on the issue, though it was not yet sufficient.

"I have said that we will honour our commitments, I have also said that there may be particular programmes that we want to continue to be a part of", she said.

"In the same way as we have seen movement in the last 24 hours in relation to the financial settlement, I expect that we will see movement in this regard in the next few days as well", Ireland's European Union commissioner Phil Hogan told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday.

"We need political solutions now and we are not getting them from the UK Government".
