Anxious White House Mulls Banning Staff From Using Personal Cell Phones

  • Trump has repeatedly ranted against unauthorized leaks coming from the White House

According to a new report, the White House is thinking about implementing a new ban which will prevent members of the staff from using their personal phones when they're at work. That might sound paranoid, but White House officials believe that Chief of Staff Kelly's phone had been compromised for months, which concerned administration officials who feared that foreign governments had obtained information by having access to the phone. White House has been dealing with a high level of leaks, though that is just one of many reasons why it's trying to implement a ban to not have personal phone usage at the White House. The White House is mulling a personal cell phone ban for employees and possibly visitors, citing cybersecurity concerns.

The White House already takes considerable precautions with wireless devices, including a requirement for officials to leave phones in cupboards outside of meeting rooms where sensitive or classified information is discussed. However, the news service said White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, whose personal phone was found to be compromised by hackers earlier this year, was at the front of the effort to impose a ban.

Cell phones issued by the White House can not send text messages, and the computer network denies access to Gmail, Google Hangouts and other websites.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly complained about press leaks since taking office, but one official said the potential change is not connected to such unauthorised disclosures. Trump raised security concerns in May when he handed out his personal number to world leaders in Mexico, Canada and France, breaking diplomatic protocol, the Associated Press reported. During the president's recent trip to China, staff members were given "burner" or disposable phones to use in place of their regular work or personal handsets in case their phones were hacked.
