The campaign starts on Saturday - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - and ends December 10 - International Human Rights Day. The men say the woman consented to the sexual encounter but have admitted to stealing her mobile phone.

Separately, the Family and Social Policies Ministry posted a banner and short video marking the worldwide day.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisah Djaba, said in a statement that the campaign would continue to contribute to a world free from gender-based violence especially for women and girls.

"The appalling treatment of women in the entertainment industry and even in national parliaments is in the headlines, and we also need to see the pandemic of violence that many other workers face given the same attention". Women in Pakistan are regularly subjected to violence.

Ghana on Saturday began a nationwide campaign against gender-based violence.

The conference was attended by the representatives of government agencies, global organizations, MPs, members of civil society and public figures.

Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) head for the northern zone, Qazi Mohammad Sami, on the sidelines of the ceremony told Pajhwok Afghan News that about 443 cases of violence against women had been recorded this year.

It also coincides with the trial in Spain of five men accused of gang raping a woman, then 18, in July 2016 during the famed Pamplona bull-running festival, a case that has shocked the country.

"Sexual violence and harassment against women is prevalent in our society".

On this day, let us remember that all of us have a critical role to play in ending violence against women.

"For Afghan women to achieve their full potential and their huge capacity in development, in peace and in security, the violations of the rights of women and girls, particularly through violence, must cease", he said.

Trade unions are using the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls as a rallying point for a strong ILO Convention to tackle gender-based violence at work. Sustainable Development Goal 5 calls to "Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation".
