In recognition of the dozens of people who died during the fire at Leogrand Hotel in Georgia's seaside town of Batumi last night, November 27 has been declared as a day of mourning.

"Twelve people died of carbon monoxide intoxication" at the 22-storey Leogrand hotel, the regional health minister Zaal Mikeladze told journalists, AFP reported.

The cause of fire was not immediately clear but authorities blamed fire regulations for the probable accident.

"Sixteen trucks and hundreds of firefighters fought the fire (...) now off", said the regional ministry of the Interior in a press release, stating that "the thick smoke hinders evacuation" of customers still present in the hotel.
