North Korea is under heavy global pressure to end its nuclear and missile programmes, pursued in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions, but has vowed never to give up its nuclear arsenal which it says it needs to counter perceived USA aggression.

A North Korean soldier shot multiple times while defecting to the South is in a stable condition but riddled with parasites that could complicate his chances of survival, his doctor said on Thursday.

"We have also discovered a parasite never seen in Koreans before", Lee said.

But the case of this defector stands above the others - his small intestine is ruptured, contaminated with fecal matter, and infected with parasites, Lee told the Review.

"President Xi recognizes that a nuclear North Korea is a grave threat to China, and we agreed that we would not accept a so-called freeze for freeze agreement, like those that have consistently failed in the past", Trump said.

The defector crossed the demilitarised zone earlier this week, but was shot several times by North Korean border guards as he ran across the Joint Security Area in Panmunjom to the South Korean side. It denies North Korea's persistent accusation that it is planning to invade. Inside the soldier's gut, they also found corn, a staple grain of the North Korean diet.

Their continued prevalence in North Korea could be linked to the use of human excrement as fertiliser, often referred to as night soil. "The parasite infection problem seems to be serious even if it does not represent the entire North Korean population".

Doctors said the soldier's height was 1.7 metres (5ft 7in) and his weight 60kg (9st 6lb).

Meanwhile, the highest-level Chinese envoy to North Korea in two years, arrived in Pyongyang Friday to try to improve tense relations due to Beijing's tightening of sanctions and support for President Trump's calls for more pressure on the North to abandon its nuclear weapons program. A study in 2009 found preschool children in the North were up to 13cm shorter and up to 7kg lighter than those brought up in the South.

An official from South Korea's top spy agency, the National Intelligence Service, told lawmakers on Thursday that North Korea has not secured the key technologies needed to build a ballistic missile that can survive a return through the atmosphere, the Yonhap news agency reported yesterday, citing a "parliamentary source".
