TransCanada Corp has shut part of its Keystone pipeline after 5,000 barrels of oil leaked in Amherst, South Dakota, the company said on Thursday, four days before the state of Nebraska was due to decide on an expansion of the system.

TransCanada says that expects the pipeline to remain shut down as the company responds to the leak.

Crews shut down the pipeline about 6 a.m., according to the company's website, after a drop in pressure was detected in its operating system resulting from an oil leak that is under investigation.

One of those leaks happened in southeastern North Dakota in May 2011, when 14,000 gallons spilled after a valve failed at a pumping station near the South Dakota border.

The leak, which it said happened about 35 kilometres south of its Ludden pump station on a right-of-way, comes as Nebraska Public Service Commission is set to vote on the Keystone XL project on November 20 to clear the last major regulatory hurdle for the $8 billion project.

The Keystone pipeline has leaked more than 200,000 gallons of oil in South Dakota, the company for the project said on Thursday. The Keystone XL pipeline has been opposed by environmental and Native American groups since it was proposed past year. It would carry tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada to refineries on the Gulf Coast.

The Keystone XL is proposed to cut through the Nebraska Sandhills and connect with the existing Keystone Pipeline on the southern edge of the state.

The federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration didn't immediately return an email requesting additional information from The Associated Press. President Donald Trump reversed that decision swiftly after taking office, which placed the final permitting decision in the hands of Nebraska.
