  • Broadcaster accuses Senator Al Franken of sexual harassment

Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) if she believed the woman who stepped forward on Thursday accusing Franken of groping and kissing her during a USO Tour in 2006, the NY senator replied: "I do".

She also shared a photo that appears to show Franken placing his hands over her breasts while posing for the camera.

His call for an investigation came after several other lawmakers had called for an ethics investigation into the allegations. "I am asking that an ethics investigation be undertaken, and I will gladly cooperate".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., immediately called on the Senate Ethics Committee to review the allegations against Franken, who issued a brief statement of apology.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand had said Franken's earlier statement - in which he dismissed the photo as "clearly meant to be funny" - was insufficient and that she believes Tweeden's accusations, but wouldn't comment on whether her Democratic colleague should resign, according to The Hill.

"But I send my sincerest apologies to Leeann", Franken wrote. "As I recall, that was fine for our grandmothers".

"I found myself extremely attracted to the vulnerable side of this sexy scientist, and when I offered to comfort her, she accepted, kissing me full on the lips and inserting her tongue into my mouth and moving it around suggestively", Franken wrote. But "I've decided it's time to tell my story".

Tweeden wrote that she avoided Franken as much as she could during the rest of the tour, and made sure she was never alone with him. "It wasn't until I was back in the USA and looking through the CD of photos we were given by the photographer that I saw this one", Tweeden says of the photo, which shows Franken grinning, his hands on Tweeden's clothed breasts. "I felt violated again", he said. "Then he said it again", she wrote. "What Sen. Franken did is wrong and regardless of political party, sexual harassmen and sexual abuse are unacceptable". "Women across America should be able to feel safe in their workplace, and they deserve our support when coming forward with allegations of misconduct". "I've had to live with this for 11 years", she said on-air. Women who come forward are fearless and deserve to be respected.

Tweeden credited Congresswoman Jackie Speier's (D-California) account of being assaulted when she was a young Congressional aide as inspiration to come forward. "We're not going to fix the problems of sexual harassment and assault until men take responsibility for their actions and change their behavior". And they deserve to know that I am their ally and supporter.

"People make mistakes. I'm not calling for him to step down".
