Same-sex marriage victory: what happens next?

  • Same-sex couples still months away from tying the knot in Australia

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has declared a Yes vote in the same-sex marriage survey will have people see "Parliament at its best" as he seeks to play down divisions among his MPs over new religious protections.

The Nationals and a powerful right-wing faction of the Liberals - including prominent members of Turnbull's Cabinet - are strongly opposed to equal marriage, while centrists and the youth wing of the Liberals are in favour of reform.

Despite some early criticisms that the use of the postal system would make the survey inaccessible, an overwhelming 79.5 per cent of Australian voters did participate, in what the Chief Statistician called an "outstanding" turnout.

But he shot down changes proposed by Victorian senator James Paterson to allow people such as cake-makers and florists to refuse to take part in same-sex marriage ceremonies.

Parliamentary opponents of same-sex marriage such as Matt Canavan and Cory Bernardi are standing firm.

David Kalisch from the ABS delivered the incredible news during a news conference at Belconnen, a suburb in Canberra where the ABS is based.

Almost 80 per cent of eligible Australians took part in the voluntary poll and the outcome will be announced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics at 10am on Wednesday.

An estimated 13 million Australians have returned their postal surveys in the nationwide ballot - a bigger percentage than voted in the UK's Brexit referendum.

Of course, introducing marriage rights for same-sex couples is always a positive move in itself, ending the denial of a right that should never have been denied in the first place.

We're expecting to hear from the No campaign as well, but they haven't made any public announcements about how they will respond to the news.

"Australians will be voting for today", he told ABC radio. The skywriting appeared to be crowdfunded through a Go Fund Me page.

VOTED overwhelmingly in favour of same-sex marriage in a postal survey, it has been announced tonight. "We would have to pick ourselves up".
