  • Nintendo near deal to license Mario for Universal movie

Nintendo is thriving this year, and with the release of the hugely successful "Super Mario Odyssey", Mario seems to be seeing a bit of resurgence. Presumably, this iteration of Mario at the movies will be more charming and relatable than that surprisingly grim interpretation.

Illumination Entertainment is near an agreement with Nintendo to make an animated "Super Mario Bros." movie based on the iconic video game franchise about plumbers Mario and Luigi, Variety has confirmed. Being crafted by Illumination's Paris studio Mac Guff, the film is only in the early stages of planning.

Of course, Nintendo is nearly laughably protective of their intellectual properties, especially after the disastrous 1993 live action Super Mario Bros. movie.

Universal finances and releases films produced by Illumination, which it co-owns with the animation company's chief executive, Chris Meledandri.

A Nintendo spokesman declined to comment, as did an Illumination spokeswoman. Furthermore, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto will most likely serve as a producer. Nintendo is said to have pushed for its considerable involvement in the creative process.

The characters, or any Nintendo character in fact, haven't been seen on the big-screen since the disastrous Super Mario Brothers movie in 1993 which starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Considering Mario's mutability over the years, the movie could really be about anything-a rowdy go-kart race, for instance.
