  • President Trump gets involved in UCLA basketball players' shoplifting case

Trump brought up the arrests during his state visit to Beijing, arriving a day after the three freshmen were accused of stealing designer sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton. LiAngelo Ball - the brother of Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball - Cody Riley and Jalen Hill are free on bail but under house arrest.

The arrests made news in the United States and China, according to the Post's report.

President Donald Trump asked Chinese president Xi Jinping to personally intervene in the arrest case of UCLA freshman LiAngelo Ball and two teammates, reports David Nakamura of The Washington Post. Xi, according to the Post, promised Trump he'd look into the matter, and make sure the players are treated - quoting from the article - "expeditiously and fairly".

That may have led to some legal help too.

Let's hope this all does come to a close soon enough, otherwise we may end up having to let LaVar Ball try his hand at reaching an agreement with China.

Citing a source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation, ESPN reported the players could be in Hangzhou for "a week or two" while the situation is resolved. Under watch by Hangzhou police, they've been staying at a lakeside hotel where they've been unable to leave.

Trump will return home and say the trip was a huge success, while Xi will believe the home field advantage really works. Chief of Staff John F. Kelly has been in touch with the families of the players and spoken with UCLA coach Steve Alford, and Kelly remains in contact with Chinese authorities, the official added.
