When Appleunveiled the iPhone X, it claimed the Face ID was so secure that even the best quality masks wouldn't be able to fool it. They offered some details about the mask, saying that a handmade artist developed the nose. Bkav explains the method requires detailed measurements or a scan of the user's face, making it too advanced for your average hacker to take advantage of.
"With Face ID's being beaten by our mask, FBI, CIA, country leaders, leaders of major corporations, etc are the ones that need to know about the issue, because their devices are worth illegal unlock attempts", it said. The firm placed paper cut outs, pizza toppings and bottle tops over a sleeping subject's eye lids to successfully fool Face ID in an iPhone X handset.
Skeptics were quick to predict that someone would be able to fool Face ID since it was unveiled in September. At the time, Apple's senior VP of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, stated that "professional mask makers and makeup artists in Hollywood" had helped to "train the neural networks" of Face ID, making phone security more reliable than ever and nearly impossible to hack.
To create their mask, they didn't use just one material, like silicone, but merged different techniques. Regardlessly, security researchers at Bkav claim to have dodged Face ID by using a special mask. Other parts, such as the eyes were made from 2D images. It said in a statement that an artist fashioned the mask's nose by hand and that artificial skin was also made by an artist.
In a video released by the company Bkav, an employee unshrouds the mask, to which the phone apparently responds to by unlocking. It's enabled by Apple's TrueDepth camera, projecting and analyzing over 30,000 invisible dots to create a precise depth map of your face.
It took the researchers some attempts to get the mask right in order to trick Face ID, but at $150, around £114, to create the mask, the hack is not massively expensive providing one has the knowledge how to create it to specifically beat facial recognition systems.
"Apple will disable the Face ID after five attempts, and force the user to enter a passcode, which should be secure", Norris said. But, being the new kid on the block, we thought we'd ask you what you think of Face ID?
Bkav wrote in its blog that the efforts involved to fool the Face ID would make it incredibly hard to compromise casual users.
The cybersecurity company Bkav proved that Apple's face recognition technology is useless and users who purchased the new iPhone X should be more careful.
