Trump's ex-aide probed over plot to 'kidnap' Turkish cleric

  • Michael Flynn and his son Michael G. Flynn are reportedly being probed by Speical Counsel Robert Mueller over a kidnapping plan to snatch a cleric away from the U.S. and deliver him to the Turkish government

The Journal reported that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents asked at least four people about a December meeting in NY where Flynn and Turkish government representatives discussed removing Gulen, according to people with knowledge of the FBI's inquiries.

Mueller is reviewing emails sent from Flynn Intel Group to Rohrabacher's congressional staff thanking them for the meeting, according to one of the sources, as part of his probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

But a new report in today's Wall Street Journal should rock the Trump administration, if not the president himself, because it deals with post-election conduct that may have continued even after the inauguration.

Under the alleged proposal, Mr. Flynn and his son, Michael Flynn Jr., were to be paid as much as $15 million for delivering Fethullah Gulen to the Turkish government, according to people with knowledge of discussions Mr. Flynn had with Turkish representatives. Flynn then retroactively registered as a foreign agent.

The Journal reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) questioned at least four people in regard to a mid-December meeting in NY at the "21" Club.

Flynn was sacked after just 24 days as Trump's national security adviser over misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak.

The allegations of a plot involving the dissident cleric could open up Flynn and his son to charges including 'conspiracy to kidnap'.

In September, the Wall Street Journal reported a meeting about the plan, in which former Central Intelligence Agency director James Woolsey participated.

According to the two reports, the discussions included details of how Mr Gulen, a Muslim cleric who lives in Pennsylvania, could be flown secretly by private jet to the isolated Turkish prison island of Imrali. There's no indication that money changed hands or that an agreement was made. The White House has distanced itself from the men charged by Mueller - Papadopoulos, former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business associate Rick Gates.

While his investigation is focused on Russian meddling, Mr Mueller has a broad mandate and has homed in on Mr Flynn's activities as Mr Trump's lead national security adviser.

Flynn resigned almost three weeks after Sally Yates, the acting attorney general at the time, warned the White House that Flynn could be vulnerable to Russian blackmail over his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.

Special prosecutor Robert Mueller is examining the meeting Flynn had with senior Turkish officials. All of this reportedly at the direction of the Turkish government.
