Self-driving bus crashes on its first day of work

12 November, 2017, 02:12 | Author: Melinda Barton
  • A self-driving bus debuted in downtown Las Vegas on Nov. 8 2017

"The autonomous shuttle was testing today when it was grazed by a delivery truck downtown", the post stated.

Thankfully no-one was injured and the damage was light, however local news reports that the driver of the truck was cited with police confirming that the shuttle bus was not at fault in the incident.

A spokesperson for AAA, which is sponsoring the latest pilot program, said on Twitter that the accident was due to "human error" on the part of the truck driver.

The shuttle is manufactured by NAVYA, comes equipped with LiDAR technology, GPS, cameras, and will seat 8 passengers with seatbelts. The issue here is that while the Navya shuttle bus was able to come to a complete stop using its autonomous tech, it was unable to simply back up a few feet and get out of the reversing semi's way.

A driverless shuttle bus was in a auto accident the first day the electric vehicle was being tested in Las Vegas. The shuttle's sensors registered the truck and performed the correct actions, the rep said, by stopping to avoid the accident.

The city added it will continue operating the buses through Las Vegas' downtown area over the next year. But, the truck continued backing up until its tires touched the front of the shuttle. In return, the company will donate $1 per every passenger who rides the shuttle to those affected by the mass shooting in Las Vegas that took place in October. That said, some are questioning the autonomous vehicle's roadworthiness since it was apparently unable to back up or try and turn to avoid the collision.

AAA has partnered with Keolis, the city of Las Vegas and the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada on the shuttle project, which offers free rides for up to 11 passengers as it travels a half-mile loop in the Fremont East neighborhood.

A truck backed into the self-driving shuttle, causing a relatively minor crash with no injuries.
