Facebook 'remembers' nude images to combat revenge porn

  • Facebook is trying to combat “revenge porn” by encouraging users to submit their nude

Facebook today explained in more detail its new test for combating revenge porn following mass confusion earlier this week over how exactly the system works and whether it puts users at a higher risk for abuse. So if someone posts the offending pic, Facebook can prevent it from being uploaded. Once the image has been hashed, Facebook notifies the person who submitted the photo and asks them to delete the photo from Messenger. Australia's eSafety Commission said Facebook doesn't store the image, it stores a link and uses artificial intelligence to sort out the pictures.

The new initiative is now being piloted in Australia in partnership with the Office of the eSafety Commissioner.

Facebook Australia's plan to fight revenge porn seems a bit counterintuitive.

Revenge porn is a growing issue in Australia, according to e-safety commissioner Julie Inman Grant, who is working with Facebook on the trial.

This imprint will then flag up through messenger and automatically stop it being shared on Facebook, Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

Facebook is testing a controversial new strategy they claim will help protect its users from becoming victims of revenge porn.

Facebook said it looked forward "to getting feedback and learning" from the trial.

Facebook's Head of Global Safety, Antigone Davis, said the pilot is an industry first, and builds on the non-consensual intimate images tool announced by Facebook in April that uses cutting-edge technology to prevent the re-sharing of images on its platforms.

The unorthodox scheme is now being tested among Facebook's Australian users, but Britain, Canada and the United States are also expected to take part in the project.

"To prevent adversarial reporting, at this time we need to have humans review the images in a controlled, secure environment", Stamos further explained on Twitter.
