The legal team for Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott are attempting to settle his ongoing case with the National Football League and have his suspension reduced from six games, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

"This is bigger than a suspension", Elliott told reporters.

It's unclear how many games they have proposed to the NFL, but neither the league nor the NFLPA intends to settle this case and have Elliott's suspension reduced at this time, sources said. Elliott, who was not arrested or charged in the case, maintains his innocence after being accused of assaulting his former girlfriend in Columbus, Ohio.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Elliott for six games on August 11 after a 13-month investigation concluded he was in violation of the league's personal-conduct policy for the incident in the summer of 2016.

A panel of federal judges will convene this week to hear Elliott's request for an injunction that would overturn Judge Katherine Polk Failla's ruling from Monday. That means Elliott's six-game suspension for alleged incidents of domestic violence has been put on hold again.

Elliott's lawyers and the NFL Players Association could ask for further litigation if the decision does not go in their favor. The NFL planned to enforce Elliott's suspension beginning Sunday until Friday's intervention by the appeals court. ESPN reported earlier Sunday that Elliott's outside attorneys have attempted to reach a settlement with the NFL.
