Disney reportedly in talks to buy 21st Century Fox

Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe was established after Disney bought Marvel Comics, fans have been hoping that the movie rights from properties like X-Men and Fantastic Four would eventually revert back to Marvel Studios.

This is very early and CNBC notes that at this very moment, the two companies aren't talking. "People familiar with the situation" say there's no certainty a deal will happen and talks have been on-again, off-again.

The deal that was under discussion, as reported by CNBC, would have seen Fox selling its movie studio, television production unit and entertainment networks to Disney.

If Disney buys Fox, let be known that the Simpsons called it-almost 20 years ago.

The company could not own two broadcast networks and would therefore not buy the Fox broadcast network. It also wouldn't buy Fox's sports programming properties because combining them with ESPN could present antitrust issues.

Shares of Twenty-First Century Fox jumped by about 10% to as high as $27.49 after CNBC's report, while Walt Disney shares surged by almost 3% to as high as $101.12.

If a deal like this did happen and did receive regulatory approval, it could have some significant effects on sports. Such an agreement would prevent Disney from violating FCC rules, which prohibit one company from owning more than one of the four major broadcast networks - Disney already owns ABC. But 21st Century Fox wouldn't sell all of its company. In 2016, Buena Vista (Disney) was #1 with over 26% of the movie market share of domestic box office alone, while Fox took slightly under 13% to place third. However with this sale, Disney can merge the MCU with the aformentioned characters. So it would definitely be interesting to see how a more-focused-on sports Fox would do, and how investors would react.

Fox's shares jumped 9.9 percent to close at $27.45 on Nasdaq, and Disney shares climbed 2.0 percent to $100.64 on the New York Stock Exchange.
