Flanagan finished second in the 2010 New York City Marathon in 2:28:40, the highest finish by an American in 20 years at that point.

Compatriot Manuela Schar, three times a runner-up in NY, beat five-time victor Tatyana McFadden by almost three minutes to win the women's wheelchair race in 1:48.09.

Shalane Flanagan came to the finish line of the New York City Marathon and enveloped herself in an American flag, the magnitude of what she had accomplished bringing her to tears and to her knees.

The 36-year-old, runner-up in 2010 and sixth at last year's Olympics, won in two hours 26 minutes 53 seconds.

Kenya's Mary Keitany, who was chasing her fourth consecutive NY victory, was second with 61 seconds back.

Flanagan's win disrupted the marathon dominance of Kenya's Mary Keitany.

The 2017 event was held just five days after a deadly Manhattan truck attack that left eight people dead.

More than 50,000 runners participated across the different groups.

Shalane Flanagan wins her first world marathon title.

Flanagan placed sixth in the women's marathon in at the Rio Olympics previous year, the top American finish. She had blown away the field here a year ago, winning by a margin (3 minutes 34 seconds) not seen in the women's race since 1980.

After taking the lead in the 23rd mile, the 24-year-old 2015 NY runner-up had to contend with Kipsang, whose final push brought him ever so close to his countryman. Keitany won the last three marathons and was second to Flanagan.

Switzerland swept the professional wheelchair divisions. Kipsang settled for the second place at 2:10:56.
