  • Michigan State running back Gerald Holmes pushes for extra yards in the first quarter of their Big Ten football game against Michigan State at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday

A week after J.T. Barrett's flawless final quarter derailed a ideal season, Michigan State's Matt Coghlin added his name to Spartans lore with a 34-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Nittany Lions 27-24.

One week after throwing for a single-game program-record 445 yards with four touchdowns in a loss at Northwestern, Lewerke finished 33-for-56 passing for 400 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Penn State's forecast remains gloomy. Eastern time. The game resumed at 4:37 p.m.Michigan State officials instructed the fans at Spartan Stadium to exit the facility.Rain began to fall in the first quarter, stopped briefly and then resumed shortly after the teams went to their locker rooms. Davis' best catch of the game came just minutes after both teams returned to the field.

Penn State vs. Michigan State news:Lewerke is an above-average quarterback and ranks in the top half in the Big Ten in passing average, passing efficiency, and total offense.

For the third time this season, the Gophers have had a game delayed by lightning.

The Spartans tied the game up at 14 before halftime and took a 17-14 lead midway through the third.

A couple of plays later, Coghlin split the uprights from 34 yards out as time expired to put the Nittany Lions' national title hopes to bed. But, the Nittany Lions couldn't help themselves.

Penn State was driving for the potential go-ahead score but went for it on fourth-and-3 from the Michigan State 31-yard line and McSorley's pass was incomplete. But Penn State, coming off a heartbreaking one-point loss at Ohio State last week, responded with 10 points in a span of just over two minutes.

Saturday's marked the second weather-delayed game of the season for Michigan State, following their 30-27 win at Minnesota on October 14, in which the start was bumped back.
