  • Patrice Evra is led away by team-mates

Former Manchester United star Patrice Evra's kick to the head of a fan has seen him red-carded before the opening whistle of his Marseille side's Europe League match on Friday morning (NZT).

Patrice Evra has been hit with an "immediate layoff" and could face further sanction after getting involved in an altercation with supporters on Thursday, Marseille have confirmed.

Former France captain Evra, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during an eight-year spell with United, joined Marseille from Juventus in January, but has made just two appearances for the club in all competitions this season.

Evra was subsequently sent off by the referee before the game had even started.

Patrice Evra did what in football parlance is called an "Eric Cantona" during a clash with Marseille fans last night.

"An internal investigation has been opened to establish responsibilities." the statement read via Sky Sports.

"Similarly, the club can only condemn by definition any destructive behaviour by a "pseudo supporter" who insults his own players when everyone must instead support his team".

Evra is likely to face a lengthy ban for the incident.

Marseille boss Rudi Garcia claimed the veteran defender should have showed more maturity in dealing with the incident - but also took a shot at the group of rogue fans.

"Pat has experience and he must not react, it's obvious", Garcia said.

And he was caught on camera raising his boot to a supporter in scenes similar to when Cantona ran into the crowd at Selhurst Park 12 years ago.
