In latest lawsuit, Qualcomm accuses Apple of leaking its software to Intel

In January, around the same time Apple sued Qualcomm, a Qualcomm shareholder filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, demanding compensation for a fall in share prices that he blamed on the way Qualcomm's management has handled its anti-trust controversies.

The dominant chipmaker filed a lawsuit in a California state court claiming Apple broke a contract when it emailed Qualcomm asking for "highly confidential" information about how its chips work in devices that run an unnamed carrier's network.

While the details of the suit are scarce right now, Bloomberg reports Apple "made an email request for proprietary information from Qualcomm and included an Intel engineer on the distribution list". This access was "unprecedented", according to Qualcomm, but Apple insisted it was necessary and Qualcomm agreed. Apple and Qualcomm have been in a messy legal dispute since the start of the year. Apple's decision about next year's products comes after the San Diego-based Qualcomm withheld software needed to test chips in prototypes, the Wall Street Journal reported. That same month, Apple's contract manufacturers joined its countersuit against Qualcomm saying the lawsuit against them is "yet another chapter of Qualcomm's anticompetitive scheme to dominate modem chip markets, extract supracompetitive royalties, and break its commitments to license its cellular technology on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms".

Apple uses Qualcomm modems in some of its iPhones and added Intel to the supply chain with the iPhone 7 models.

Apple responded to this, saying that the company had tried to negotiate before suing and that Qualcomm is abusing its position. Still, these results are a reflection of the toll that the legal battle between Qualcomm and Apple is taking.
