In a statement, the MoD acknowledged that the soldiers in the remote Maiwand district of Kandahar province were targeted by the Taliban in twin suicide auto bombings followed by an armed assault.

The Taliban have killed at least 43 Afghan soldiers in an attack that wiped out an army camp in the southern Kandahar province, the Defense Ministry said today (19).

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying in a text to media outlets that 60 Afghan security forces were killed.

Toryalai Abdyani, the police chief for Paktia province, was also killed in the attack in Gardiz, capital of Paktia province, some kilometers away Kharlachi area of Pakistan.

According to the initial reports, after the two vehicle bombing the attackers engaged in armed clashes with the Afghansecurity forces.

Other insurgents then stormed the base - which resulted in a firefight between Taliban members and security forces.

The leader of a Pakistani Islamist militant group has been killed by a suspected United States drone attack in Afghanistan, its spokesman says.

Afghan forces have struggled to combat a resurgent Taliban since the U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces formally concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014.

Taliban fighters then assaulted the facility, setting off several hours of fighting that killed almost every Afghan soldier there and wounded nine.

In recent months, the Taliban have been attacking Afghan security forces on a weekly and sometimes daily basis.

Defense ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri told AFP the attackers detonated at least one explosive-packed Humvee vehicle and razed the compound in the early morning assault. "On the same day in Ghazni an attack on District Headquarters left 20 dead - 15 of them police".
