  • Edmonton Police Service homicide detectives are investigating after a man's body was dug up from under a garage near 118 Avenue and 96 Street in north

Knecht said the driver, believed to be 30 years old, then got out and attacked the officer with a knife before fleeing on foot.

The attack started on Saturday night when a man drove a vehicle at high speed at a police checkpoint outside the Commonwealth Stadium during an American football game.

- Police are investigating the incidents as acts of terrorism.

A flag of the Islamic State militant group was found inside the Malibu, after the suspect ran off, said Rod Knecht, police chief of Edmonton, Alberta's provincial capital.

Trudeau said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the country's Integrated National Enforcement Team had joined the Edmonton police in its investigation. During a high speed chase, four pedestrians were hit before the suspect's vehicle that overturned on Jasper Avenue.

Mr Knecht said a flag similar to that used by the Islamic State group was found in the front seat of the vehicle and seized as evidence.

Knecht said the officer was standing behind a barricade when a Chevrolet Malibu crashed into it and hit the officer.

The knife attack ignited a wild search for the violent suspect in the province's capital before police say preluded a second assault involving a vehicle - and the same driver.

Roughly two hours into the manhunt which followed, a large U-Haul van was observed racing through downtown with as many as a dozen police cruisers in hot pursuit.

Canada has not experienced as much violence from extremist attacks as the United States and Western European nations, though there have been several deadly incidents in recent years.

"I am deeply concerned and outraged by this tragedy", he said in a statement.

The driver "deliberately tried to hit pedestrians in crosswalks and alleys" during the high-speed chase on downtown streets, Knecht said. "We know that Canada's strength comes from our diversity, and we will not be cowed by those who seek to divide us or promote fear", Trudeau said.

"To the best of our knowledge, this was a lone wolf attack", he said as he urged calm.

The truck eventually flipped, ending the chase. The man who attacked with the help of van has been taken into custody.

At midnight police managed to find the suspect in a van trying to escape.

Police did not release the man's name but said he was known to them.

Police on the scene were able to identify the driver from the car's registration information.

Edmonton police are expected to provide an update later Sunday morning.
