  • Intel targets high-end gamers with 8th-generation desktop chips coming Oct. 5

The new eighth-generation Core desktop processors require Intel 300 series chipset motherboards to deliver the rated performance. The new processors are catered to all kinds of users from gamers, content creators and overclockers.

We are already familiar with the confusion the company has created regarding the naming and generation.

The new range comprises the Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, and Core i7 processors and are said to be available from 5th October. Also, the upcoming Cannonlake 10nm chips would come under the 8th Gen family. It's a clear response to AMD's Ryzen, which now offers better multi-threaded performance and higher core counts than Intel's Core i3, i5, and i7 family. With Turbo Boost 2.0 enabled, it's single-core clock can be cranked up to 4.7Ghz. The crown jewel of the lineup is Intel's Core i7 8700K as well as the non-K Core i7 8700, featuring 6 cores and 12 threads.

Intel said the new Core chips would be available for purchase October 5, while customers will see OEM systems that incorporate the processors beginning in the fourth quarter of 2017. They both use dual-channel DDR4-2666 for impressive memory performance too.

With the launch of Intel's Skylake-X CPUs with up to 18 cores and the public disclosure of Intel's 8th Generation Coffee Lake-S CPUs, Intel is what's buzzing today, but there is even more news to deliver. Unfortunately, while Coffee Lake is more affordable than an X299 chip-the questionable quad-core i5-7640X and i7-7740X excluded, prices are higher than Kaby Lake across the board. Price has also taken a hit, the Core i7 8700K now costs about $55 more than the Core i7 7700K and the Core i5 8600K about $40 more than the Core i5 7600K. These processors will be supported with the new Intel Z370 chipset-based motherboards. As usual, along with the regular SKUs, Intel has also announced the performance aimed unlocked K processors. AMD gets a larger benefit out of SMT than Intel does, but this will be a tough fight.

Compared with 7 Gen Intel Core, gamers gain up to 25 percent more frames per second on popular and demanding games, Intel said, and its new processors are more accurate, faster, powerful and compatible than earlier versions, allowing for high quality of graphics creation and consumption. Stay tuned for a benchmark roundup right here on Tom's Guide, as well as more granular tests from our friends at Tom's Hardware and Anandtech.
