North Korean leader: Trump is 'mentally deranged'

  • N. Korea threatens US with ‘horrible nuclear strike and miserable and final ruin

His message on "fiery" rhetoric was implicitly directed at North Korean Kim, but also at the United States and President Trump, who later warned of "totally destroying North Korea" if it does not back down.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports that Ri told reporters in NY that a response "could be the most powerful detonation of an H-bomb in the Pacific". Trump also mocked North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the speech, dubbing him "Rocket Man". Under the executive order, U.S. Treasury Department will be able to target individual companies doing business with North Korea.

And after Trump issued an executive order imposing new sanctions on North Korea, Kim responded by saying the United States would "pay dearly" for the new sanctions.

Kim described Trump as "a madman" and "a frightened dog" and "a mentally deranged U.S".

"I will make the man holding the prerogative of the supreme command in the USA pay dearly for his speech calling for totally destroying the DPRK", read the statement carried by North's official Korean Central News Agency from Pyongyang.

On September 3, the United Nations put sanctions on Korea over the recent nuclear tests.

During his long-awaited speech before the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday, Trump again called Kim "rocket man", a reference to the government's ongoing and frightening missile and nuclear testing, and threatened the US could "destroy" the North if it continued to make its own threats towards the USA and its allies like South Korea and Japan.

The rhetorical battle came as outside experts say North Korea is getting closer to achieve its long-stated goal of building nuclear-armed missiles capable hitting anywhere in the US mainland.

The president also praised China in disrupting their trade with North Korea, although several media outlets said it has yet to be confirmed from Chinese officials that this was the case.

Even amid such sanctions and threats, Trump and his aides say they hope to resolve the stand-off over nuclear weapons without resorting to military action.

Brzezinski read out the statements from Kim and Trump; the latter she called "unbelievable".

The announcement from Beijing came at the end of a week that saw tensions ratchet up between the United States and North Korea, with the leaders of both countries trading insults.
