Everton striker Wayne Rooney bloodied by 'elbow' during Bournemouth win

  • Leighton Baines of Everton and Wayne Rooney of Everton are seen in the stands during the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Everton and Sunderland at Goodison Park

After a challenging couple of weeks which saw us face some of the leading contenders for the Premier League title, Wednesday night's 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over my former club Sunderland provided some home comfort ahead of this weekend's league game with Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

Just nine minutes into the second half, Rooney was brought off for Oumar Niasse, who bagged in mid-week.

"I didn't sign for another team".

If you had asked Everton fans at this point past year how they felt about Oumar Niasse, some of them would have even gone as far as to suggest that he was the worst striker to have played for the club.

Calvert-Lewin should have put the result beyond all doubt late on, but his miss ultimately mattered little as Everton held firm to claim a vital win and move out of the relegation zone, where Bounemouth remain second from bottom. At least Ronald Koeman ditched the back three experiment, albeit only because of an injury to Michael Keane.

Before today's match, Bournemouth failed to score in their two previous away fixtures.

Bournemouth's win over Brighton last weekend arrested a run of four straight defeats in the Premier League.

That may be the case, but things would not have looked good for Koeman without the intervention of Niasse, making his first Premier League appearance for Everton since May 2016, and fellow substitute Tom Davies. "We had chances to kill the game but at 1-0 they always have a chance". We have a great opportunity to build some real momentum now and show what we are capable of before going into the next worldwide break.

I have played at Goodison a few times now and I already believe I have built up a strong relationship with our supporters.

Everton were immediately more aggressive and direct and nearly equalised only for Andrew Surman to hook Mason Holgate's header off the line, a decision aided by the goalline magic eye. We needed in the second half to have another striker close to Dominic to press a bit better than we did before.

Don't get me wrong, Rooney's been excellent since coming back to Merseyside, working hard and showing great commitment as you'd expect from a born Blue. Last season was a total different situation with (Romelu) Lukaku. "You have key moments during the season and this was a big win that will give everyone a boost". It is frustrating from our perspective to come here and put that kind of performance in and not get anything.
