Iran launches new ballistic missile

  • Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warns Iran could resume its previous nuclear activities if the US exits a nuclear accord with Tehran

Tehran stated Saturday that it has successfully tested the new ballistic missile Khorramshahr, which was unveiled yesterday during a military parade.

But the U.S. has argued Iran's missile tests breach a United Nations resolution, which endorsed the nuclear deal.

Though Iran has long boasted of having missiles in the same range in its arsenal, it was the first time that the Khoramshahr, with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) was displayed in public.

Tehran says that the missiles are entirely legitimate under the terms of the deal as they are not created to carry a nuclear warhead. The missile, Khoramshahr, was launched from an unknown location. Netanyahu vowed to fight what he described as "an Iranian curtain" descending on the Middle East, and pledged to prevent Iran from producing any weapons that could hit Israel.

Escalating a war of words with the United States, President Hassan Rouhani of Iran declared Friday that his country would continue to develop new missiles and "would not seek anyone's permission to defend our land".

Addressing an armed forces parade in Tehran on September 22, marking the anniversary of the outbreak of the 1980-88 war with Iraq, Rohani pledged to build as many missiles as deemed necessary for deterrence and to reinforce other sections of Iran's armed forces.

Rouhani said the United States and Israel have isolated themselves by opposing the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the other major powers. He added that Iran remains fully committed to the pact, Press TV reported.

Trump has vowed repeatedly to take a tougher line towards Iran, threatening at various time to renegotiate or dismantle the 2015 nuclear deal, and shoot Iranian boats out of the water if they provoke U.S. naval vessels.

The Iranian president also reaffirmed his country's commitment to the nuclear deal. "Due to this, it belongs to the entire global community".

"We have to work in order to have a monitoring process on the ballistic activity of Iran." he told CNN.

USA defense officials said the test seemed to be a failure because the missile crashed or exploded after flying more than 500 miles.

Iranian media outlets are calling the new missile "long-range" - but by most standards, it would be considered a medium-range ballistic missile. The video included footage from an on-board camera showing the detachment of the cone that could carry multiple warheads.
