  • Peace activists will remember Hiroshima, Nagasaki bombings, call for ban on nuclear weapons

In a speech delivered at an annual memorial ceremony, Matsui noted that 122 countries last month adopted a treaty banning nuclear weapons to demonstrate "their unequivocal determination to achieve abolition".

However, in June, Japan had supported the United Kingdom, France and the U.S. in dismissing a United Nations treaty banning atomic weapons.

During the final stage of the Second World War, the United States dropped nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945 respectively, killing 140,000 people.

"For us to truly realise a "world without nuclear weapons", the participation of both nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states is necessary", he said.

Japan celebrated the 72nd anniversary of the Hiroshima nuclear bombing, the world's agencies said on Sunday.

Tokyo announced its surrender in World War II on Aug 15, 1945.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui on this occasion urged that the absolute evil of atomic weaponry be banished.

"Today, a single bomb can cause even greater damage than the bombs dropped 72 years ago".

"Yet our dream of a world free of nuclear weapons remains far from a reality", he said.

He referred to the adoption in July 2017 of the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons by United Nations member states as a positive development.

He warned against the stockpile of 15,000 nuclear weapons and unsafe rhetoric regarding their use.

None of the nine countries that possess nuclear weapons took part in the negotiations or voted on the treaty.
