The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed worry that the country was drifting towards anarchy in the wake of massacre of scores of worshippers at Saint Philip's Catholic Church Ozubulu in Anambra State.
He called on security operatives to bring perpetrators of the crime to justice.
Security personnel have cordoned off the church, which has since been deserted by worshippers.
He extended his condolences to families of the victims, assuring them that the government would do everything within its power to track down those responsible.
According to the priest, an unidentified man came into the Church, shot at a man before shooting sporadically at other worshippers.
A witness said some gunmen, who concealed their identities with masks, broke into the church around 6am when the first mass service was holding just as the eye witness affirmed that the armed mass murderers after they gained entry identified a particular man whom they shot.
A witness, who simply identified herself as a choir member, said the gunman left immediately into a waiting auto with a driver.
Anambra State Police Commissioner Garba Umar said the viciousness could be connected to sedate trafficking.
The attack took place early in the morning at around 6 am local time when worshippers had gathered for a Sunday mass.
A Xinhua reporter in the state said the identity of the attackers and their motive have not been established as an investigation is underway.
He dismissed reports that the incident was a church invasion.
Governor Willie Obiano has visited the church and the Nnadi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital where over 50 doctors are batiling to save lives of the injured persons.
In the video below, NAIJ.com TV asked some Nigerians if they consider the police as their friend.
