Moscow slams new European Union sanctions

  • EU extends Russia sanctions over Crimea

The European Union has widened sanctions against Russian companies and persons, including the deputy energy minister, over the illegal diversion of four Siemens gas turbines from southern Russia to Ukraine's Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula.

European Union member states had until late on August 4 to object to the new sanctions.

The EU imposed sanctions on Russian Federation three years ago after it annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, and refuses to recognize Moscow's authority there.

"The decision of Brussels to include a number of Russian officials and companies as a retaliatory measure for alleged illegitimate supply of Siemens gas turbines to Crimea prompts deep regret", according to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The EU said 153 people and 40 companies had now been targeted by individual sanctions against Russian Federation.

"This decision contributes to the establishment of independent power supplies to the Crimea and Sevastopol, which supports their separation from Ukraine and undermines Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence", the report says. The move follows the transfer of gas turbines to the area.

Gas turbines are a substantial element in the development of new power plants, it pointed out. The proposal for providing weapons to Ukraine comes amid tension between the White House and Congress over how to respond to Russian interference in the 2016 election, and an investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. The latest additions complement a blacklist that already contains 150 people and 37 entities subject to an asset freeze and a travel ban over the turmoil in Ukraine. The EU Council adopted these legal acts by written procedure.
