Judge Lawrence Moniz convicted 20-year-old Michelle Carter on Friday for her role in the death of 18-year-old Conrad Roy III, report CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post. “Get back in, ” Carter told Roy, according to a friend who testified Carter described the conversation in a text message to her about a month after Roy died.

Prosecutors allege that Carter caused Roy's death by relentlessly badgering him with text messages urging him to kill himself.

The judge's decision surprised many legal experts, who had said that, despite the callousness of Carter's conduct, the case presented a stiff challenge to prosecutors because MA, unlike dozens of other states, has no law against encouraging suicide. Prosecutors argued that Carter wanted Roy to die so she could play the part of the grieving girlfriend. Carter wrote in one message, according to AP. She faces up to 20 years in prison and will be sentenced on August 3.

Mr Moniz also banned Carter from contacting Roy's relatives and ordered her not to obtain or apply for a passport.

Her lawyer argued Mr Roy had a history of depression and suicide attempts and was determined to end his life. It was discovered on Roy's phone hundreds of messages between the two.

Defense attorney Joseph Cataldo portrayed Carter as not in control of her actions because of prescription medication that left her with the delusion that she could help Roy by urging his death.

"This court, having reviewed the evidence, now finds you guilty on the indictment charging you with involuntary manslaughter", Mr Moniz told the court.

Matthew Segal, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union of MA, said that the verdict was a "drastic expansion of criminal law in MA".

The guilty verdict in the sensational suicide-by-texting case immediately unleashed both criticism and praise from legal and free speech experts, underscoring its impact on future court cases. "You just keep pushing it off to another night and say you'll do it but you never do".

Knowing that Roy was in his truck and in a toxic environment, the judge said, Carter took no action.

That Roy may have died by suicide at a different time "is of no outcome to this court's deliberations", Moniz said.

Roy's handwritten suicide note was revealed in court on Tuesday during the final day of Carter's trial. Furthermore, Massachusetts - where the trial took place - is distinct from many other states because it doesn't have any laws preventing people from encouraging others to commit suicide.
