Trump does not intend to fire investigator Mueller: White House

Mr Trump said Mr Mueller's friendship with James Comey, who had been heading the inquiry until sacked from his role as Federal Bureau of Investigation chief, was "bothersome".

"Well, he is very, very good friends with (former FBI Director James) Comey, which is very bothersome", the President said in a Fox News clip that aired Thursday.

With Mueller investigating Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election and its potential collusion with the Trump campaign - as well as possible obstruction of justice by Trump himself - the president maintained his innocence. On June 8, Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee that Donald Trump asked him to drop an investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

Trump also claimed he had always told a "straight story" about whether he recorded his private conversations with Comey. That probe is also expected to explore the circumstances of Trump's firing of Comey on May 9 and whether that dismissal was an attempt to obstruct the Russian Federation probe.

During the Fox interview, Mr Trump also questioned the impartiality of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the probe into Russia's meddling in the USA election and the possible collusion with the Trump campaign. The president's earlier suggestion that he had tapes that he now says never existed undercuts him, Robenalt said.

At an off-camera briefing for White House reporters, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders attempted to put the issue to bed.

After the report, Trump tweeted that Comey had "better hope that there are no tapes" before he "starts leaking to the press".

Fox News' Ainsley Earhardt also teed up Trump to complain about Mueller's team, which includes several lawyers who have given money to Democrats and one who represented the Clinton Foundation in a racketeering lawsuit brought by Larry Klayman, the Clinton-trolling head of Freedom Watch.

Trump has also repeatedly claimed that millions of illegal immigrants voted in the last election, with no proof.

By firing Comey, Trump landed himself in even more serious trouble.

"I think the president has played the media like a fiddle for two and a half years", said Florida Sen.

By flattering Trump, and inflating his ego, Fox News may have added to evidence that Trump obstructed justice. "You know, health care is a very hard situation".

President Donald Trump has questioned the impartiality of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the probe into Russia's meddling in the USA election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

The Trump Administration has moved to accommodate the President's dubious rhetoric in other ways. The foreign surveillance was eventually passed on to American spies, who acceded to demands from the West Wing of the Obama White House and handed over transcripts of conversations and names of participants. Spicer echoed Trump's comments, saying the reference to "tapes" in Trump's tweet simply reflected Trump's desire for "the truth to come out".

No tapes were ever uncovered, but Comey later revealed during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing that he orchestrated the release of a memo that detailed conversations between him and the president.

His tweet came a day before he was required by Congress to hand over any such tapes.

"It's basically trying to tell Comey, 'Don't say anything, '" O'Sullivan, now a law professor at Georgetown University, said.
