  • Spicer: 'It's Possible We Will Have an Answer to That at the End of the Week'

The president and top White House aides have reportedly criticized Spicer for his response to several high-profile incidents, including Trump's firing of James Comey as FBI director and an investigation into leakers within the communications staff, but Spicer is still considered one of the president's greatest assets.

White House Correspondent Jim Acosta on Monday said White House press secretary Sean Spicer is "just kind of useless" as tensions continue to escalate between the Trump administration and the press corps.

In late May, Michael Dubke resigned as White House communications director after three months on the job. Whether Spicer will stay at the White House in a different role is still unclear. The longtime Republican strategist's departure left the White House in a position to restructure its communications department, according to the report. The president has both praised and castigated Spicer for his performances at the briefing room podium but has never told him he was in danger of being fired.

"We have sought input from many people as we look to expand our communications operation", White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

Spicer would likely hand off duties for the daily briefings, but continue to manage the communications and press office, according to the network. Spicer held another off-camera briefing today, but this time audio was not recorded. "No decisions have been made".

Separately, Politico reported on Monday that the search for Spicer's replacement is well underway: Fox News contributor and radio host Laura Ingraham has already been interviewed for the gig. Spicer later expressed frustration that other reporters who had observed the scene didn't come to his defense and explain that he was talking with someone on a sidewalk hemmed by shrubbery, not literally hiding in bushes.
