Special counsel is investigating Jared Kushner's business dealings

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story", he wrote on Twitter.

In another tweet, Trump called it "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

The new development Thursday appears to be that the inquiry has shifted to Mueller.

"It would be a catastrophic mistake, but he doesn't have the authority to do it", Republican senator Susan Collins of ME told reporters. Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mueller.

A spokesman for the office of the special counsel declined to comment, and so did a representative for the director of National Intelligence.

The Twitter attacks came as Vice President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.

After Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Trump said that Comey had told him three times that he was not under investigation.

Tensions escalated with Mueller's latest moves.

That suggests Mueller is examining the president's own conduct, which may include whether Trump tried to obstruct justice.

Jared Kushner's business dealings and finances are being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller as part of his probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, the Washington Post reports. The paper cited unidentified officials familiar with the matter.

Jamie Gorelick, Kushner's attorney, told the Post that they did not know what the latest report refers to. "Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about Russia-related matters. He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry".

Trump also red his own lawyer last month for probes by a special counsel and congressional committees. Comey confirmed that in his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week. Coats later told lawmakers he never felt pressured to intervene.

As counter-programming to the Russian Federation narrative consuming the White House, Jared Kushner's Office of American Innovation has been talking up "Infrastructure Week" and "Workforce Week" to generate some momentum on bipartisan issues that might put some points on the scoreboard for his father-in-law and boss, President Donald Trump. "It will be a closed hearing", Adam Schiff of California, the panel's top Democrat, told reporters. The FBI is also looking into the financial activity of Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, and Carter Page, the Post says, and all of them have been cut loose from team Trump.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's personal attorney Marc Kasowitz, reacting to the news stories that prompted the Trump tweets, blamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation for leaking information regarding the president, which he called "outrageous, inexcusable and illegal". However, the Post noted the meeting took place at a time when Kushner's company sought finance for its troubled $1.8 billion purchase of an office building on Fifth Avenue in NY.
