  • Inmates Donnie Russell Rowe left and Ricky Dubose escaped from a bus Tuesday authorities said

The couple held hostage by Georgia inmates Donnie Russell Rowe and Ricky Dubose, who were armed and on the run for over 48 hours after one of them shot and killed two correctional officers Tuesday, made a dramatic call to 911 on Thursday that led to the risky prisoners' capture.

The suspects fled in the couple's vehicle and fired on sheriff's deputies chasing them on Interstate 24 about 50 miles southeast of Nashville, Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Bill Miller said. The trucker said that he saw two men who looked like they might be trying to steal vehicles.

Luckily, the homeowner was armed, and after calling the police and his neighbors, they were able to keep the murderers at gunpoint until police arrived and arrested them.

Rowe, 43, and Dubose, 24, were on a state corrections bus with 31 other prisoners Tuesday morning when the two somehow got out of what should have been a locked, gated rear section of the bus, police said.

Hours before their capture, Putnam County, Georgia, Sheriff Howard Sills said the public was in "grave danger" and that authorities did not know where the risky inmates were.

He and a neighbor held them at gunpoint until authorities arrived. The corrections officers were later identified Christopher Monica, 42, and Curtis Billue, 58. In a statement released by the Georgia Department of Corrections, they said, "Both officers were known for their unwavering commitment to their job and their love of family".

"We need the eyes and ears of everybody really in this country to be on the lookout for these two individuals", Sills said earlier today.

The home invasion led authorities to hunt down the Jeep, which they reportedly discovered driving down I-24 and engaged in pursuit.

Donnie Rowe, 43, and Ricky Dubose, 24, were apprehended following a vehicle chase with police about an hour's drive southeast of Nashville, said Stephen Emmett, a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Atlanta.

Then they stole clothing, jewelry and other valuable items from their home, even eating the wife's beef soup. Leaving the couple bound, Dubose and Rowe took off three hours later with the couple's cell phone and Jeep.

At about 5:30 p.m. CT, Swing said Dubose and Rowe chose to leave and stole the couple's Jeep Cherokee.

Authorities confirmed Thursday that two men who were arrested earlier in the day in Tennessee after tying up and robbing a couple there were the two Georgia escapees who were wanted for killing two Georgia corrections officers.

"Now we're gonna go into the prosecution and trial mode", Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said in a news conference with reporters after the arrest.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Georgia Governor Nathan Deal had tweeted earlier that the two men were in custody.

Now they'll be transported back to Putnam County, and the families of Christopher Monica and Curtis Billue can rest a little easier knowing that the men suspected behind their deaths are behind bars before their funerals. "We will do everything in our power to support their loved ones, and we will not forget their sacrifice and service".

Authorities say the two inmates overpowered and disarmed the guards on a bus about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday as 33 inmates were being driven between prisons., Tenn.

Both escapees were in prison for armed robbery and other crimes. Authorities are asking the public to keep an eye out for the stolen 2008 white Ford F250 pickup truck with the Georgia tag BCX-5372.
