  • NBA: Paul George's Future — Was Larry Bird Leaving Pacers a Clue?

Paul George has put the Indiana Pacers in a bad place by diminishing his own trade value, but the star could potentially be available for a relative bargain price if any team wants to bet on convincing him to stay long term.

This past season with the Pacers, George averaged 23.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists, leading IN to the playoffs.

Paul George informed the Pacers on Sunday of his pending decision to leave IN when his unrestricted free agency hits IN 2018.

For the 2018-19 season, Los Angeles is looking at $15.6 million in available cap to sign free agents, according to The Vertical's Bobby Marks.

Per Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, George informed the Pacers of his intentions to leave the team in free agency and his preference to join the Lakers. The max contract the team can now offer George is a five-year, $177 million extension.

That doesn't necessarily mean George won't be dealt, any student of National Basketball Association history is well aware that deals have come together in much shorter time than a week.

However, by mentioning that he wants to go to the Lakers, it's unlikely that the Pacers will be able to trade him.

The Vertical reported Sunday that sources indicate George would prefer to end up with the Los Angeles Lakers. The current CBA makes that contract only available to George under a narrow set of circumstances, and only from the Pacers.

"That was something that I didn't recognize", Lakers President and co-owner Jeanie Buss said.

The Lakers have the clear advantage at this poker table.

The Paul George rumor mill is never going to stop churning.
