  • Cars 3 Races Past Wonder Woman at the Box Office

The third installment in Pixar's Cars franchise saw the animated feature debut with an estimated $53.5 million domestically and $21.3 million internationally.

The haul by "Cars 3" was enough to displace "Wonder Woman", though the Warner Bros. superhero movie continued to thrive in its third weekend, with $40.8 million. The latest DC Comics superhero movie, directed by Patty Jenkins, brought in 274.6 million US dollars after just 17 days in theaters through Sunday in North America and 571.8 million USA dollars worldwide.

The first two films in the "Cars" franchise have reflected the growing clout of markets overseas. "All Eyez on Me", the Tupac Shakur biopic from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., opened to $27 million to place third.

Universal's "The Mummy" placed fourth with an estimated 13.9 million USA dollars in its second weekend. The movie grossed a muted $3.3 million Friday for a projected $8 million-plus weekend.

The kid-friendly movie was directed by Brian Fee - who also worked on storyboards in the franchise's first two movies - and features actors Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, Armie Hammer, Larry the Cable Guy and others. The original Cars opened to $60.1 million in its North American debut and went on to earn a total of $462.2 million worldwide.

Despite being knocked down to second place, Wonder Woman still had an impressive showing. The G-rated film follows in the tire tracks of 2011's "Cars 2" (66.1 million US dollars debut) and 2006's first installment (60.1 million USA dollars debut).

Sony's raunchy R-rated comedy, "Rough Night" came in at seventh place with $8.1 million from 3,162 locations. Only one in four critics had praise for the movie, in which Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays rapper Shakur.

Outside the top 10 is Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow's latest film, The Book of Henry, which earned an estimated $1.4 million from 579 locations. Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Zoe Kravitz, and Glazer make up a rowdy girl gang who reunite for a bachelorette weekend that goes horribly wrong.
