US President Donald Trump calls for unity after shooting targeting lawmakers

As for rehabilitation, Sava said he believed Scalise will be "able to walk and hopefully run" in the future.

Doctor Sava described Scalise's shot to his left hip as a devastating "trans-pelvic gunshot wound" from a high-velocity rifle.

Sava added that Scalise's "risk of death right now is substantially lower" than it was early Wednesday, when he was shot on a baseball field in Alexandria, Va., as he practiced with other Republican lawmakers. In that bad crime, the country also witnessed the incredible heroism of the Capitol Police, he said, adding that Special Agent Crystal Griner - who he also met during his visit to the hospital - raced into gunfire, along with Special Agent David Bailey.

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.

Scalise probably has hundreds of bullet fragments in his body, and doctors don't plan to remove them because usually there is more risk than benefit in doing so, Sava said. Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

The FBI said that the shooter's weapons found at the scene - a 9mm handgun and 7.62mm caliber rifle - had been legally purchased. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday.

Hodgkinson posted content favorable to Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on his social media accounts and signed a Change.org petition for the removal of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

The congresswoman's wife, Jennifer, issued a statement Friday thankful for "the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received". But he stopped short of providing specifics of Scalise's internal injuries. Also suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.

The gunman in the early morning attack at the ballpark in Alexandria, Virginia, was identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.

At the hospital, though, he remains sedated and is only at the beginning stages of what will be a long recovery.
