United States congressman Steve Scalise still critical after Washington shooting

United States lawmakers have returned to regular business ready to play their annual charity baseball game a day after a man angry at President Donald Trump fired on Republican legislators, leaving a senior congressman in critical condition.

The president's meaning was unclear as he made the comments at an event on Cuba policy in Miami.

Scalise "continues his very courageous fight ... but it's been much more hard than people even thought at the time".

During a press conference Friday, Dr. Jack Sava told reporters that Scalise faced "imminent risk of death" when he was brought to the Medstar Washington Hospital Center on Wednesday morning after being shot during a Congressional baseball practice. The hospital planned to hold a briefing on his condition later in the day Friday. As I sat in the dugout, I was horrified as I thought about Majority Whip Steve Scalise, the heroic Capitol Police officers, and the young former and current Capitol Hill staffers who were injured. Representative Joe Barton of Texas accepted the trophy on Scalise's behalf. "That's the source of unity and more than ever we must embrace it".

In the course of Thursday night's charity game, which drew a record attendance to Nationals Park, MedStar hospital issued a new update on Scalise's condition, saying that the lawmaker "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

The No. 3 House Republican will also require additional operations before leaving the hospital Sava said, though he added that an "excellent recovery is a good possibility".

Scalise had been fielding balls at second base when he was shot and then dragged himself away from the infield in a trail of blood.

Hodgkinson, from IL, died in hospital of gunshot wounds sustained in a gun battle with Capitol Hill police. Authorities also were going over a cellphone, computer and camera taken from Hodgkinson's white van, which was parked near the ballfield.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

Ivanka Trump, joined by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and her two eldest children Arabella and Joseph Kushner, presented a $50,000 check from "Friends in the Trump Administration" to "Congressional Sports for Charity" at the game.

Later, the crowd burst into applause as Capitol Police Officer David Bailey - who was injured as he pursued the shooter - hobbled to the mound on crutches and tossed the ceremonial first pitch. Mika's family said the lobbyist was shot multiple times.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at Wednesday's practice and gave medical help after the shooting, said it would have "been awful" if the game had been canceled, and said Scalise would want it to go on.
